New Range Of 2011 CST 18ft Skiff Spars Is Here
A busy lead up into the 2011 J.J Giltinan Championship saw a range of new products being released for the 18ft skiff class. The most significant probably the release of new mast sections for both no.1 and no.2 rigs as well as new rectangular booms. The development included 3D Solidworks design and in house manufacturing of new mandrels. All this was achieved in a very short time frame to allow enough on water testing in time for the championship.
The development was driven by CST’s 18ft skiff guru Chris Dixon and trailed on CST Composites 18ft Skiff skippered by Howie Hamlin. Howie finished the regatta in respectable 5th place showing the potential of the new products with minimal testing. The new masts are an evolution of last year’s design and have been developed to suit the latest sail trends and ever increasing working sail area. The result is substantial increase in stiffness over the 2010 rigs while keeping weight down to a minimum.
The new high modulus 130x55mm rectangular carbon fibre booms are also significantly stiffer than last year’s product. “Increase in mast stiffness called for stiffer booms as well, so going to a rectangular section seemed like the obvious choice. We have now done this for most of our dinghy classes as it has allowed us to maximise the stiffness in the Y axis without the added weight that would have been experienced with the oval section. Rectangular booms have been used in high performance yachts for years, so I guess it was only a matter of time before this development made its impact on the dinghy and skiff arena,” said CST’s GM, Chris Dixon.
In order to bring the weight of some of the skiffs down to minimum, CST also produced a set of intermediate modulus carbon fibre wings for the J.J.Giltinan winning boat Gotta Love It 7. 2kg weight reduction over the conventional standard modulus carbon wings was achieved, while maintaining the same stiffness characteristics.
With the next major regatta being the European Championships, we are confident that with more time on the water CST Composites 18ft skiff will be one of the hot contenders.

CST Congratulates Its New World And Australian Champions
Photo: Nathan Outteridge flying the Australian flag after winning the 2011 Moth worlds at Belmont NSW
Nine national and one world championship wins for CST product has been a result of our strong focus on R&D and a close working relationship with some of the leading sailors in their respective classes.
Our congratulation goes to the crew of “Brydens Compensation Lawyers” who bounced back to win the windy 16ft Skiff Nationals sailed from Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron. The team skippered by Lee Knapton used CST’s new carbon fibre rectangular boom, spinnaker pole and fibreglass mast tips in both no1 and no2 rigs.
Current I14 world champions Archie Massey and Dan Wilsdon convincingly won the Australian I14 Championship with a string of first places. They too used the new rectangular boom and a modified configuration HM3 CST mast.
Rohan Nosworthy and crew Neil Tasker dominated the MG14 nationals with the lowest possible score of 7, after scoring a 1st place finish in every heat. They used the newly developed high modulus elliptical mast as did last year’s winner Hugh Tait, who placed 2nd.
Trevor Fay and Nathan Chipchase once again won the Cherub nationals with the CST HM one piece mast while the B14 National Championship was won by current world champions Guy Bancroft and David Grace.
Glen Ashby added yet another Australian Championship crown to his sailing portfolio winning the A-class and Brien Hennessy won the Javelin tittle sailing with crew Andrew Hackett.
Peter V. made a comeback to the NS14 class winning the Australian Championship with Tina Babbage while Nick Craig won the Phantom class in the UK.
Nathan Outteridge was also victorious walking away with the Australian Moth Championship, sailed as a warm up event before the Worlds. He then marched on to win the World Championship as well, sailed in a strong fleet of 113 boats. In fact this was undoubtedly the best quality fleet the Moth class has ever seen. Comprising of a number of World and Olympic champions as well as celebrated Americas Cup and Volvo Ocean Race sailors.
During the past few months CST Composites worked extremely closely with Nathan to develop a range of new masts specifically designed to suit the KA and MSL10 and MSL13 sails. No less that 21 prototype masts were made for the CST Moth Team, refining the bend characteristics to perfection in order to achieve the optimum luff curve match. Nathan also used the new CST rectangular boom which has proven to be stiffer and lighter than last season’s model.
All of the above products will be available as the part of our new 2011 range in the coming weeks.

CST Carbon Tiller Extensions Used By The World's Best
Australian Sailing Team member Tom Slingsby has been named the 2010 ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year.
Tom already a multiple world champion in the Laser class is the first Australian to win this prestigious award.
CST Composites has been involved with the Australian Sailing Team since 2007 as the official equipment supplier. We decided to supply tiller extensions for Tom and the rest of the team including 49er World Champion Nathan Outteridge, in order to offer them a custom solution that would hopefully provide an edge over their opposition. Working with each team member we produced tiller extensions that are specific to their sailing style.
It is fantastic to see Australia’s best sailors achieve their goals with just a little over 18 months until the Olympics.

Nathan Outteridge Wins Moth Europeans
In July CST supported sailor Andrea Bonezzi was crowned the “European Contender Champion”, using CST’s HM Club mast. Two weeks later CST spars have won yet another regatta.
This time Australia’s Olympian and CST team member Nathan Outteridge, has beaten a strong fleet of 85 boats to become the 2010 European Moth Champion..
Sailed on Switzerland’s Lake Silvaplana, the championship was one of the closest on record. Nathan and fallow CST sailor Bora Gulari were the standouts from the rest of the fleet. Last time these two met, Bora was victorious taking the World Champion crown in USA. This year Nathan came back in a new boat sporting a prototype “Elite” series mast from CST, and experienced great speed improvement to win the championship by 2 points.
The next big event on the Moth calendar is the 2011 World Championship to be sailed from Belmont 16ft Sailing Club on Nathan’s home waters of Lake Macquarie. It should be a great contest between these two sailors, however past World Champions like John Harris could also cause an upset. The top 10 is likely to be made up of ex World and Olympic Champions

Rowing Oars Break Test
CST composites has been supplying rowing oar shafts for Jac Oars since 2007, however we have recently undertaken more development work in order to compare CST’s filament wound tubes versus opposition fabric wrapped tubes.
A number of “cantilevered” tests was performed on both opposition and CST shafts where both deflection data and breaking loads were recorded.
The data was conclusive, it showed CST filament wound shafts to have a 25% higher ultimate load while being 11% lighter.
The secret to superiority of filament wound products lies in its high fibre to resin ratio, uncrimped fibre paths and accuracy of our computer controlled process.

Archie Massey and Dan Wilsdon win the 2010 CST Composites I14 Worlds
Strong fleet of 109 boats contested the International 14 class Worlds on Sydney Harbour. The regatta hosted by Manly 16ft Skiff Sailing Club, required a split in fleet to Gold and Silver divisions, due to the high number of participants.
The series was sailed in a range of conditions over a 7 race format and eventually won by Sydney based Brit Archie Massey and Australian crew Dan Wilsdon. The winners on board Carbon Fibre Express sponsored boat were dominant in all conditions with superior tactics, boat handling and excellent downwind speed.
The pair scored four 1st placings, a 2nd and 6th to win by 11 point margin over Roger Gilbert and Ben McGrane with Mark Krstic and Andrew Wilson in 3rd place.
This is also Archie Massey’s 2nd consecutive world title crown, something that has not occurred before, in the class that has heritage dating back to the 1930s
“We did a lot of development with Archie and Dan leading up to the series. Particularly with his new CST HM2 Mast and with Dave Alexander doing sail development. It is fantastic to see the guys win the series,” said CST Composites General Manager Chris Dixon.

Extreme Testing
The photos below show CST carbon fibre mast tip tested to destruction.
The tip was manufactured as a test product for the popular dinghy class utilising our filament winding technology. It shows the importance of manufacturing tubes with external 45 degree fibres which help stabilise and consolidate the internal unidirectional layers.
The application of external binding layers around a mast is centuries old and not to dissimilar to original techniques of wrapping rope around timber masts.

B14 Bass Strait Crossing
Young crew of Adrian Beswick and Josh Phillips successfully crossed Bass Strait in their B14, part of their efforts in raising money towards the Tasmanian Devil Appeal.
The B14 team’s crossing was only 2 hours and 18 minutes short of a record breaking time set by Michael Blackburn sailing a Laser.
The Tasmanian Devil is facing extinction with large numbers suffering from cancerous facial tumour disease. All money raised from the event has gone towards the scientific research and management programs for the devil’s across the globe.
The CST sponsored team has now returned to Tasmania for some well earned rest after competing at Melbourne’s Black Rock sailing club over the weekend.
CST composites continues to develop its range of carbon fibre yachting spars. We have just completed a sample section 300mmx190mm inside diameter suitable for yachts around 50ft in length.
The new D section uses the same filament winding technology used to produce multiple class winners in dinghy classes as well as sections used by the popular Flying Tiger 10 class.

CST Composites rigs finish 2nd and 5th at 2009 J.J.Giltinan Championships.
The J.J. Giltinan Championships sailed on Sydney Harbour saw one of the closest finishes to date, decided meters before the finish of the last race.
Early series leader Active Air-2UE skippered by Matt Searle, sailed a very consistent regatta finishing only 1 point behind the eventual winner Southern Cross Constructions (Euan Mc Nicol).
The series was wide open coming into the final Heat 7, with any one of the top 3 boats in with a chance.
Active Air-2UE were in a dominant position early in the race as Southern Cross Constructions were 4 minutes behind, after a disastrous start. With 2 laps to go Active Air-2UE still looked strong, with Southern Cross doing everything they could fighting their way through the fleet. The light and fickle breeze saw 90 degree shifts, allowing Southern Cross to make big gains on the leaders with a lap to go.
During the last downwind run, the title was still open. Active Air-2UE had to finish 2nd and get Gotta Love It 7 between them and Southern Cross. It all looked promising until the young team on Panasonic pipped them on the finish line to get 2nd. Active Air was relegated to 3rd, and Southern Cross climbed to 4th. One place behind Active Air-2UE and enough to give them the series.
Rag and Famish hotel also sported the latest rig from CST Composites and showed some good form winning the NSW Championship before the start of J.J. series. They looked strong after 4 heats, but slipped back towards the end of the regatta, to finish 5th overall. CST rigs were also used by Smeg, SLAM and Pure Blonde all finishing inside the top 10.

12 Nationals wins for CST
It has been a massive year here at CST Composites with 12 National and 6 World title wins to our name. Out of those six world titles some of them have come from the prestige classes as well as leading edge skiff technology such as; Moths, I 14’s, A-Class Cats, 12ft Skiffs and the Contender class. Our high standard and quality products are not only evident in those classes but with 12 National wins in: 12ft skiffs, B14’s, I 14’s, Cherub, Flying Dutchman, Javelin, NS14, Skate and the Vee Ess. Here at CST composites we are proving to be the leading supplier for high quality lightweight and top performance spars.
12 Years ago CST started pioneering with filament wound tubing for masts in small dingys and skiffs. By using our unique process we have supplied the fastest skiffs all over the world with flexible, responsive tapered masts and beams that have outperformed the competition. Managing Director, Clive Watts had the foresight to see that filament winding could provide tube with an automated process, high quality and repeatability that sailors look for in a product. This was the way of the future compared to pre-impregnated fibers that were traditionally roll wrapped and could not compete with filament winding. The current haul for this year shows that we are the best providers of filament wound lightweight, high performing masts and beams.
To movewith development times we have introduced our new range of high modulus masts. These new masts are filament wound using epoxy resin and “High Modulus” carbon fibre to give responsive, lightweight and tough masts. These masts are smaller in diameter and lighter in weight. Generally mast stiffness has increased with square top mains and have been individually developed with each of the classes.
With all the new developments CST Composites is heading into an exciting 2009. By the end of January machine number six will be online, which can wind four times faster whilst still maintaining our high quality. The entire factory is in the middle of a retro-fit with a second level being added enabling us to expand our fabrication and pultrision capabilities, this includes the recently launched sail battens for yachts and skiffs.
We continue to build our filament winding infrastructure as we aim to provide the best quality, highest performance and economical spars on the market today.

Congratulations to Archie Massey and
Matt Noble for winning the 2008 I14 World Championships
in Germany; and also to Dave Alexander and Cameron
McDonald who finished 3rd using CST's new 57mm series
High Modulus mast. The mast which is over 10mm smaller
in diametre than it's closest competitor proved to be a
winning formula. Only developed in early March, the mast
was used once before being seriously tested in the windy
conditions at the World Championship in Germany. Proving
it's strength and durability with a crew who only
partnered and sailed together at the World
Championships, CST's new mast is sure to set some new
standards. Picture

CST Rigs Set the Standard in
2004
With a fantastic start to the year, RMW Marine has won the JJ
Giltinan 18fter World Championships. With 4 wins and 2 second
places, RMW reigned supreme in the series. Excellent crew work

early strangle hold upon the championship. Beating 9 previous
JJ winners, including Howie Hamlin, took an enormous effort and Rob
and Peter Greenhalgh along with Dan Johnson did so convincingly.
CSTComposites skippered by Chris
Dixon had mixed luck with collision in the Invitational Race, which
set them back in the JJ. However they recovered towards the
end of the regatta for a 15th.
